Sparkleton and Willow looked at each other. “That was weird,” Willow said. Her voice shook a little. Sparkleton swallowed hard. He was scared, too.

“What is that?” Willow cried a few minutes later. She was pointing her horn at a ghostly yellow light. It hovered in the air over the meadow and flickered in and out like a dying fire.

And then, as suddenly as it had appeared . . .

It was gone.

“Uh,” Sparkleton said. He cleared his throat nervously. “Maybe it was the northern lights?”

“Sure,” Willow said. She sounded spooked, too. “That must be it.”

That was definitely not the northern lights, Sparkleton thought.

The two friends kept going, but the night didn’t seem so friendly anymore. And the meadow was getting bumpier and rockier. It was hard to find footing in the dim moonlight.

“Ouch!” Willow cried. She stumbled sideways, almost falling. “My ankle!”
